How Do You Tell If Your Roof Needs Emergency Tarping After Storm?

After a storm, walk around your home and inspect the roof from the ground. Look for missing or lifted shingles, torn flashing, or visible holes. If you spot any opening where water can enter, that is a strong sign you need emergency tarping.

Inside, check each room for water stains on ceilings or walls. Feel for dampness or see if any drips are active. If you notice sagging drywall or bulging paint, water is already pooling above. These signs mean the roof barrier is broken.

• Shingles or tiles scattered on the ground
• Water stains spreading on ceilings
• Active dripping or trickling water indoors
• Sagging ceiling sections or bowed drywall
• Mold or mildew smell in upper rooms

Do not climb onto the roof yourself if it is wet, steep, or damaged. A fall is a serious risk. Instead, use binoculars from the ground to inspect the surface. Look for lifted edges, broken shingles, or any spots where the underlayment is exposed.

Inside, use a flashlight to examine attic spaces and ceiling corners. Look for dark streaks, damp insulation, or water pooling on top of drywall. If you find any moisture, mark the area with tape so you can show the pros where the problem is.

After the pros secure the tarp, you should still check inside for any new leaks. If water continues to enter, the tarp may not be covering the entire damaged area. Let the pros know so they can adjust it.

Document the damage with photos and notes for your insurance records. Policies vary, and your insurer decides what is covered. Keep receipts for any emergency work you pay for, as they may be useful when you file a claim.
