Why Is My Home's Exterior Showing Staining From Water?

Water stains on your siding, brick, or foundation typically start with runoff from the roof. Clogged gutters or downspouts can overflow, sending water down the exterior walls. Over time, that water picks up dirt, tannins from leaves, and minerals, leaving visible streaks.

Another frequent cause is condensation from air conditioning units or dryer vents that direct moisture against the wall. In a humid continental climate, warm humid summers can make this worse. Cracks in the siding or gaps around windows and doors also let water seep behind the surface, creating stains from the inside out.

For light surface stains, you can try a soft brush and a mild detergent mixed with water. Avoid pressure washing unless you know the surface can handle it, since too much force can drive water behind siding. If the stain returns after cleaning, the source is likely ongoing.

Regular maintenance is your sensible defense. Clean gutters at least twice a year, especially after autumn leaves fall. Inspect your roof for missing shingles or damaged flashing that could divert water onto walls.

Seal gaps around windows, doors, and utility penetrations with exterior caulk. Keep soil graded so it slopes away from your foundation. After heavy rain or snowmelt, check your exterior for new stains and address them early, before they set in.
